Uses of Quest Pro in business

Released in October 2022, the VR headset Meta Quest Pro no longer needs to be introduced. It has already been extensively reviewed by the specialized press. After developing our first applications on this new helmet, we want to share with you our Feedback on the uses that you could consider for your projects in virtual and augmented reality.

A powerful standalone virtual reality headset

At its current price of 1,200 euros, and while waiting to be able to test future helmets in its category such as the Vive XR Elite or the very promising Lynx R1, the Quest Pro seems to us to be themost relevant option for professional use of the XR. After migrating one of our VR applications from the Vive Focus 3 to the Quest Pro, the The difference was immediate : the Snapdragon XR2+ chip almost doubles the framerate of the application, which considerably improves the comfort of use and reduces the risk of kinetosis (motion sickness). In addition, its two LCD screens (1,800 x 1,920 pixels per eye) offer the best resolution on the market for a standalone headset, drastically reducing the aliasing effect, which would otherwise require software processing, reducing performance.

Use in Mixed Reality

La big news of this headphone compared to its predecessors is its color and stereoscopic passthrough system, which finally opens up concrete possibilities for use in Mixed Reality (MR). It is possible to superimpose virtual characters, objects and settings on theFilmed image and transmitted to the lenses, and to pass scenes at any time fully virtual to augmented reality scenes. In a MR context, the learner stays in contact with the real world: he sees and hears his environment, can interact with the people around him, and thus reduces the risk of bumping into himself while greatly reducing the risk of motion sickness. Virtual elements provide information or guide the user through a procedure, making the experience both immersive and fun.

A competitor to HoloLens 2?

One might wonder if the Quest Pro can replace the HoloLens 2 from Microsoft, dedicated to mixed reality. The answer is not simple, as each of these devices has its advantages. For example, although the Quest Pro offers exceptional quality holograms (in terms of sharpness and color respect), it cannot compete with the HoloLens transparent visor for the perception of the real world. The Quest Pro's dual cameras have limitations, such as a narrower field of view, insufficient resolution to read text on real paper, and contrast and brightness issues in dark environments. However, the power of Quest Pro's calculation and display surpasses clearly that of the HoloLens, allowing for richer and more complex 3D scenes.

When it comes to camera access permissions, the HoloLens is more permissive, offering developers a full access for features like spatial mapping. On the other hand, Meta has chosen to restrict this access, limiting certain possibilities, such as the automatic detection of objects or the use of QR codes, thus forcing the user to manually configure their environment.

Didn't Meta talk about the Metaverse?

No, because that's not the point 🙂. However, it is relevant to say a few words aboutcollaborative use headphones as part of our development ofcustom applications. The Quest Pro allows the development of multi-user applications thanks to its robust connectivity, reinforced by the functionality of”Shared Spatial Anchors“, which synchronizes the perception of space so that the Position of the holograms be the same for all users in the same room.

Additionally, Meta's avatar system allows users to choose, customize, and maintain the same avatar across all applications. The follow-up of facial expressions and eye-tracking add a realistic dimension, humanizing interactions during these sessions.

Our findings

The Quest Pro, designed for professional use, does not revolutionize the market VR or MR headsets, but it represents an interesting alternative thanks to its ability to mix virtual reality and mixed reality, its general performances, and its new features.
